What hiring a genealogist actually gets you

  • Original records, not guesswork. Census returns, parish registers, certificates and wills — read at source and properly cited, not copied from a stranger’s online tree.
  • A finished story, not a data dump. You receive a written narrative and a designed family tree chart, printed, bound and posted — not a tangle of dates to make sense of yourself.
  • The copyright is yours. Everything I find belongs to you, to share, print and pass down however you wish.
  • You never pay for dead ends. A free viability assessment checks your lines are researchable before any money changes hands — and if they aren’t, I tell you.

A researcher, not a call centre

The researcher

I’m Ian Andrews, and Famhisto is me — not a faceless platform. Thirty years of professional data analysis taught me how to follow a thread through messy records without losing the plot, and I now apply that to family history full-time from my base in Wokingham, Berkshire. Every enquiry comes to me, every record is checked by me, and I’ll tell you honestly when something can’t be done. More about me →

What it costs to hire me

Most UK genealogists charge by the hour, which makes the final bill impossible to predict. I don’t. Research packages start at £245 for one family line, fully fixed and quoted before you commit. Prefer to start smaller? A one-hour £75 consultation gives you a professional’s plan to follow yourself — and the fee is credited if you commission a package within 90 days.

Questions about hiring a genealogist

How much does it cost to hire a genealogist?

In the UK, professional research typically runs £20–£50 an hour — but hourly billing makes the final cost impossible to predict. I price differently: fixed packages from £245, so you know the total before you commit. There is a fuller breakdown on my “how much does it cost” page.

Is it worth hiring a genealogist?

If you are short on time, stuck behind a brick wall, or want the research done properly the first time, yes. I have archive access, decades of records experience and the palaeography to read documents most people can’t — and you end up with a finished, citable family story rather than a half-built tree.

How do I hire you?

Start with a free 15-minute call. I’ll tell you honestly what the records can deliver and what it would cost. If you go ahead, a 50% deposit books your slot, I research and keep you updated through your client portal, and the balance falls due only when your report is ready.

Can you research Scottish, Welsh or Irish ancestry?

Yes. I work across UK and Irish records, and regularly research for families overseas who can’t reach the archives themselves. Tell me where your family came from on the call and I’ll be straight about what survives.
